7 TIPS FOR CLEANING WINDOWS

1.   Stay out of the sun – avoid washing windows in direct sunlight.  Cleaning solutions can dry too quickly which will cause streaking and smearing.

  1. Use less water – don’t think you need gallons of water on a single pane of glass.  Less cleaning solution is easier to clean with and remove.

  1. Use a squeegee – the best results are provided by professional grade rubber bladed squeegee.  Make straight strokes across or down the window and but sure to overlap each stroke by a least an inch.

  1. Home remedy – it helps to have a cleaning solution that can cut grease, nicotine and other residue.  Eight (8) cups of water, Ύ cup of clear ammonia and a teaspoon of dish detergent should do the trick.

5.   Touch up – while a rubber bladed squeegee works best for removing your solution, you may want to have newspaper or some lint free cotton cloths on hand to get some of the fine lines or spots you may have missed.

  1. Vacuum first – if you have storm windows or crank out windows, you should vacuum out the tracks and clean them of any debris to keep the windows in good working order.

7.   Wipe out streaks – be sure to wet the entire surface of the glass.  If you miss wetting a spot, you’ll just smear over it with you squeegee.

Most window cleaning services charge by the number of panes. Each pane is a piece of glass
framed on all sides by wood or metal. Some companies charge by the total square footage of
the home.

Generally, window cleaning costs $2-$7 per pane. For a 1,300-square foot home with 20 panes,
the cost would run $40-$140. For a 2,200-square foot home with 28 panes, the price would
average $56-$196.

Some companies offer a 10-20% discount for scheduling with neighbors.
